No Ordinary Man

// VIRTUAL SHOWING //

The legacy of Billy Tipton, a 20th-century American jazz musician and trans icon, is brought to life by a diverse group of contemporary trans artists. Tipton gained fame as a musician throughout the United States in the 1940s and ’50s, but his trans identity was not known throughout the echelons of the jazz and pop worlds, and it wasn’t revealed publicly until after his death in 1989. Aisling Chin-Yee and Chase Joynt’s brilliantly crafted doc maps out Tipton’s undeniable legacy, while examining the disgraceful media scrutiny and questions of legitimacy his family endured after his death.

Meet a SFF Programmer: Rodney Piatt

Rodney Piatt has cumulatively lived in the greater Sarasota area for over a quarter of a century. After graduating from Venice High School and then returning from a year of college in Chicago, Rodney has been an involved member of the Sarasota arts community. He evolved from being an avid attendee of the Sarasota Film Festival into being a part of SFF’s screening committee into his latest role at the festival as a member of the programming team. Film critic Roger Ebert once said, “...movies are like a machine that generates empathy”, a sentiment that echoes in the chambers of Rodney’s heart and motivates his work as a programmer for the Sarasota Film Festival.
